General Information

  • Vitamin D3 occurs naturally almost exclusively in animal sources, especially fish, dairy products, and eggs, as well as in meat. Plants such as lichens also contain vitamin D, as do various mushrooms, which, however, contain the less effective vitamin D2.
Vitamin D occupies a very special position among vitamins. On the one hand, it is one of the few vitamins that we hardly consume through food, but instead produce it in the skin with the help of the sun. On the other hand, vitamin D is not a vitamin in the classic sense, but rather a hormone precursor.

Unlike many other vitamins, it is converted in the body into an important hormone that controls the function of cells and numerous physical processes. Almost all cells in the body have special receptors for the vitamin D hormone and are dependent on an adequate supply of vitamin D.

Vitamin D and vitamin K2 are cofactors in the regulation of calcium metabolism. Together, the two vitamins control bone-building and breaking-down cells and important transport molecules that ensure the correct utilization of calcium.

    Vitamin K for bone health

Vitamin K is necessary for the activation of numerous vitamin K-dependent proteins (so-called VKDPs). Without this activation, VKDPs are not functional. The majority of VKDPs are involved in calcium and bone metabolism. For example, there are vitamin K-dependent proteins for calcium transport. The most important of these transport proteins are the matrix Gla protein (MGP) and Gla-rich protein (GRP). These bind calcium (for example in the blood vessels) and can transport it to the bones.

The most well-known vitamin K-dependent protein is the osteocalcin mentioned above. This is directly involved in building the bone structure.

    Synergy with Vitamin K

Vitamin D works synergistically with vitamin K for bone metabolism. This is particularly clear from the interaction within the function of osteocalcin. While vitamin D stimulates the formation of osteocalcin, vitamin K is necessary to subsequently activate it and store calcium correctly in the bones. However, both vitamins also have independent effects on bone and calcium metabolism.

The following statements about vitamin D have been approved by the EU (EFSA):

  • Vitamin D contributes to:

  • normal absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus

  • a normal calcium level in the blood

  • the preservation of bones
  • maintaining normal muscle function
  • maintaining healthy teeth
  • a normal function of the immune system
  • Vitamin D has a function in cell division
  • normal blood clotting
  • maintaining normal bones
